Creating Unique Stage Hypnosis Show Skits

We’ve seen tons of shows across the country by dozens of different performers over the years, from various conventions, to Vegas, to comedy clubs in the Midwest, school events and so forth.

Many have had the same elements or bits, but done differently, and some were done exactly the same. Just as with magic or mentalism acts - whether the same act or skit works well or not really does come down to the individual hypnotist’s presentation style.

And it’s true, there’s little worse than watching a hypnotist perform someone else’s show, an butchering it - simply because they are only following the mechanics or the script, and have not developed their own relationship with the material, in order to project their own style and make the show “their own.”

Now, why would a hypnotist perform someone else's show to begin with? Usually because their original (and perhaps only) trainer or mentor taught them their personal show, and nothing else, nor how to create their own different skits. And many stage hypnotists, believe it or not, have never seen anyone else's show, not even on video.

Is this good or bad? Well, it’s certainly handy to have a pre-designed, presumably successfully-styled show handed to you to hit the road with when you are just starting out. But on the flip side, after you’ve gotten into the swing of things, wouldn’t you rather market and perform your own, unique show?

Sometimes it's just a difference in mentality and personality. Some people buy a car and drive it until it quits without ever changing a thing about it, maybe not even the oil. And someone else might buy the same car, then change out the stereo or add new speakers, pimp out the wheels to something more flashy, add racing stripes, tint the windows, or whatever - just to personalize it and make it their own - so it doesn't look like everyone else's car - it stands out from the crowd.

There ARE a few reasons that some bits are considered “classics” for the industry and are thus used by so many hypnotists - or a "classic" of an individual hypnotist.

1) There are different kinds of skits - meaning they serve different purposes within the show - (from initial deepeners, to transitions, to high or low impact, to grand finales and so forth) - and so some become mainstays for a performer, or even the industry as a whole.

2) Those are the skits that the audience has either heard about, or remembers from a past show - and they liked them, and they want/expect to see them again.

Being in the training industry and knowing so many hypnotists around the world, now and then we hear a few complain about other hypnotists, “He stole my show! Those are MY skits!” And, if these skits were something more original than ‘laughing gas’ or ‘hot cold on the beach’, they might have a case… But THOSE are some of the mainstays, that are useful for initial comforting and deepening, and that (due to being used so often) audiences expect to see, and therefore many hypnotists continue use them.

Now, can you take the intended responses produced by those kinds of skits, and create a completely different skit that produces the same desired responses? Certainly. You’ll just have to be a little creative.

And, can you take the same laughing gas or hot/cold skit and change it up with your own patter and make it slightly more unique? Of course. You just have to be a little creative.

And, one would hope, that most hypnotists, at least those with some experience behind them, have more than one “show” - meaning they have a large enough repertoire or database of skits they are comfortable with that they can change out their show for different audiences - because obviously an adult show designed for a comedy club won’t fly at most corporate gigs, and certainly not at a high school party. But if you are a little creative, you can take the same concepts, change the patter and actions to be more or less “G” or “R” rated as necessary, and easily adapt your show for the intended audience.

The above concepts are exactly why Richard and John Cerbone put out the “Skits and Bits - Learn to Create Astonishing Stage Hypnosis Show Routines” DVD set…. So that new and ‘seasoned’ hypnotists alike can begin to understand why the order of certain types of skits is important for show success, explore the classic skits, see why they are classic, and learn to make them your own - as well as how to develop your own unique skits to create a powerful, distinctive show.

We wish you the best of luck in defining your personal stage hypnosis show style! And if we can be of any assistance, please do not hesitate to contact our office.

Perhaps the Best FREE Marketing Tool for Your Stage Hypnosis Career or Clinical Hypnotherapy Practice

  • Use the amazing power of hypnosis and hypnotic phenomena not only during sessions or shows with clients - but to GET clients, too!  ... The mistake many hypnotists make is in viewing Street Hypnosis as a whole different genre of trance performance, when really it's just an abbreviated form that can be demonstrated anytime, anywhere, with anyone.  --more--

What's the difference between 'Speed Trance' and 'Stage' or 'Street' Hypnosis - and Why would I want to learn it?

  • For those of you ‘in the know’ this may seem like a silly question, but for those who aren’t the terms may be confusing, so it’s a valid learning question, and one I’ve answered dozens of times over the past 6 months or so from curious customers.  --more--

Hypnotic Phenomena...  Huh...  What is it good for?

  • I am asked this question a lot by both new hypnotists and those who have been in practice for quite a while. They just can’t seem to wrap their minds around the concept, or they are afraid to try different forms of demonstration, so I try to explain what hypnotic phenomena is really all about.  --more--

Performing Smaller Stage Hypnosis Shows
- Bars, Restaurants, Clubs

  • I hear questions all the time from stage hypnotists about performing smaller shows - meaning for maybe 30-60 people - and in less organized venues - meaning bars or clubs, rather than a comedy club or other standard entertainment venu. Worries about these situations range from, "With such a small audience to draw from, will I get enough participants up on stage, and will enough of them be hypnotized to have a good show?" - to "What do I do if most everyone is too drunk or rowdy?" - to "What if I only have 30-45 minutes for the show?
Not to worry - you CAN do it - you just ...  --more--

About Stage Hypnosis Training and Courses

  • Stage hypnosis is one of the most rewarding fields of study and, at the same time, it can be one of the most difficult.   Stage hypnosis training can be very expensive, and most seminars occur in big cities like Las Vegas or London, or at annual conferences, like the Hypnoticon convention, now held twice each year in Atlanta and California.  --more--

About Stage Hypnotists Keeping Up with the Times

  • Now and then we get a comment or two from career professionals who are disgruntled that we Hypnosis Gurus are “selling out the secrets” of stage hypnosis, or that we are “flooding the market” with new hypnotists by offering comparatively inexpensive training to anyone interested in learning the art, and thus subsequently “cutting the fees” that the old-boy’s-club can charge for their shows.  --more--

About Teen Hypnotist Training Philosophy

  • These days, when it seems difficult to get most kids interested in anything more than chatting with friends or playing games on the Internet, it is amazing to us that many in the industry will so adamantly poo-poo the idea of training teenagers to become hypnotists.   --more--

About Clinical Hypnosis Training for Stage and Street Hypnotists

  • Many stage hypnotists are only that - stage hypnotists - and they have never taken a clinical course in hypnosis. And many clinical hypnotists only practice clinical hypnosis, and may even shudder at the mere mention of hypnosis for entertainment purposes. And then there are the hypnotists who regularly practice both stage and street hypnosis.   --more--
