Hypnosis Education Training ArticleCreating Unique Stage Hypnosis Show SkitsWe’ve seen tons of shows across the country by dozens of different performers over the years, from various conventions, to Vegas, to comedy clubs in the Midwest, school events and so forth. Many have had the same elements or bits, but done differently, and some were done exactly the same. Just as with magic or mentalism acts - whether the same act or skit works well or not really does come down to the individual hypnotist’s presentation style. And it’s true, there’s little worse than watching a hypnotist perform someone else’s show, an butchering it - simply because they are only following the mechanics or the script, and have not developed their own relationship with the material, in order to project their own style and make the show “their own.” Now, why would a hypnotist perform someone else's show to begin with? Usually because their original (and perhaps only) trainer or mentor taught them their personal show, and nothing else, nor how to create their own different skits. And many stage hypnotists, believe it or not, have never seen anyone else's show, not even on video. Is this good or bad? Well, it’s certainly handy to have a pre-designed, presumably successfully-styled show handed to you to hit the road with when you are just starting out. But on the flip side, after you’ve gotten into the swing of things, wouldn’t you rather market and perform your own, unique show? Sometimes it's just a difference in mentality and personality. Some people buy a car and drive it until it quits without ever changing a thing about it, maybe not even the oil. And someone else might buy the same car, then change out the stereo or add new speakers, pimp out the wheels to something more flashy, add racing stripes, tint the windows, or whatever - just to personalize it and make it their own - so it doesn't look like everyone else's car - it stands out from the crowd. There ARE a few reasons that some bits are considered “classics” for the industry and are thus used by so many hypnotists - or a "classic" of an individual hypnotist. 1) There are different kinds of skits - meaning they serve different purposes within the show - (from initial deepeners, to transitions, to high or low impact, to grand finales and so forth) - and so some become mainstays for a performer, or even the industry as a whole. 2) Those are the skits that the audience has either heard about, or remembers from a past show - and they liked them, and they want/expect to see them again. Being in the training industry and knowing so many hypnotists around the world, now and then we hear a few complain about other hypnotists, “He stole my show! Those are MY skits!” And, if these skits were something more original than ‘laughing gas’ or ‘hot cold on the beach’, they might have a case… But THOSE are some of the mainstays, that are useful for initial comforting and deepening, and that (due to being used so often) audiences expect to see, and therefore many hypnotists continue use them. Now, can you take the intended responses produced by those kinds of skits, and create a completely different skit that produces the same desired responses? Certainly. You’ll just have to be a little creative. And, can you take the same laughing gas or hot/cold skit and change it up with your own patter and make it slightly more unique? Of course. You just have to be a little creative. And, one would hope, that most hypnotists, at least those with some experience behind them, have more than one “show” - meaning they have a large enough repertoire or database of skits they are comfortable with that they can change out their show for different audiences - because obviously an adult show designed for a comedy club won’t fly at most corporate gigs, and certainly not at a high school party. But if you are a little creative, you can take the same concepts, change the patter and actions to be more or less “G” or “R” rated as necessary, and easily adapt your show for the intended audience. The above concepts are exactly why Richard and John Cerbone put out the “Skits and Bits - Learn to Create Astonishing Stage Hypnosis Show Routines” DVD set…. So that new and ‘seasoned’ hypnotists alike can begin to understand why the order of certain types of skits is important for show success, explore the classic skits, see why they are classic, and learn to make them your own - as well as how to develop your own unique skits to create a powerful, distinctive show.
